The “Fuzz” Concept

Posted by:

Thanks to Crossfit Sioux Falls’ blog! Here is an interesting video on the importance of stretching, getting a massage, foam rolling, exercising, and otherwise taking care of your muscles.  Enter the concept of “The Fuzz Effect”:

So, make sure you stretch out every morning while you’re still horizontal in bed.  Make sure you do dynamic warm-ups to stretch ...

I Don’t Need A Gym Membership, It’s Spring!

Posted by:

When I was doing personal training in a gym, I heard this comment a lot: “I only need my gym membership through March, because then it gets warm and I go outside.”

That’s great!  I hope you get outside as much as possible!

However, one thing I did notice was that this sentence was often code for: “I’m going to completely give up a dedicated workout program, and hope the weather is nice enough for me to walk.” Very often, these same ...

Dynamic Warm-up

Posted by:

We all want to get the most out of our workout.

When we decide to do that, it truly should start with the warm-up. This is a great time to focus intently on weaknesses, stretch tight muscles, and get blood pumping into our muscles (getting them “warmed up,” so to speak).

I start all of my clients out with a dynamic warm-up.  Very rarely will I have someone walk for 5 minutes.  It’s so much more effective to get them moving, stretching, ...

The Carbohydrate Difference

Posted by:

In the last few years, thanks to a resurgence of Atkins Dieting, there has been a lot of focus on the term “good carb, bad carb.” In reality, this oversimplistic view really isn’t true. A carbohydrate is a carbohydrate, no matter where it comes from. If it’s a carbohydrate, what it does in your body is break down into sugar, which the body then absorbs into cells and uses for energy (your brain, for example, ...

Easter Bunny

Posted by:

The fourth (or fifth, if you celebrate Super Bowl) major food holiday of the year has arrived!  It’s time to set down that chocolate bunny and step away from the Peeps, and allow your body to celebrate the arrival of spring in a healthy, joyous way:  a great workout!

This type of workout is common in my bootcamp classes, because it produces a huge amount of results in a very short amount of time (an average of 1 mm of bodyfat ...

Calories In, Calories Out Debate: RIP

Posted by:

Okay, here I’m going to link you to a couple of scientific studies.  It’s up to you to read them, but they all encompass one thing: the debate on Calories In, Calories Out is going to be laid to rest. May it rest in peace.

Article One, published in Pharmacology Biochemistry and Behavior. You can read a further in-depth (albeit protein-biased) article looking at a similar study in layman’s terms here.

Not Just the Calories

Posted by:

When it comes to weight loss, there’s a fact out there that is very pervasive.  In fact, we all know this little tidbit, even if we don’t follow all of the advice in all the magazines.  However, the fact in and of itself isn’t the whole story.

That fact is contained in this sentence: “It’s all about calories in, calories out.”

First off, let’s explain a calorie.  One food calorie is technically a kilocalorie (kcal). An actual Calorie is much, much larger.  ...

Planning A Meal or Thirty-Five

Posted by:

One of the tips that is always given by successful people is that of planning ahead.  It makes sense, as those who plan ahead can get more done in a shorter time.  One way I plan ahead is to write out a to-do list, then prioritize it.

If you are shooting for weight loss, planning ahead is key.  Once everything is planned ahead, you can go on autopilot and make small adjustments as necessary.

Those who are not used to planning ahead ...

Planning to Succeed?

Posted by:

Last week’s goal was to exercise.  If you didn’t notice, I extended that goal, because I intend to have you focus on it as being one of the most important things you can do to lose weight.  Now, that is not the end-all to finding those skinny jeans or becoming lean, but it is top priority.

The second in command: Learning to use fruits and vegetables and linking them with high-quality protein.

Huh?

The human body was not designed to eat Tostitos, Hot ...
