Easter Bunny

The fourth (or fifth, if you celebrate Super Bowl) major food holiday of the year has arrived!  It’s time to set down that chocolate bunny and step away from the Peeps, and allow your body to celebrate the arrival of spring in a healthy, joyous way:  a great workout!

This type of workout is common in my bootcamp classes, because it produces a huge amount of results in a very short amount of time (an average of 1 mm of bodyfat measurement reduction per week).  It’s also completely possible to do outside, since it doesn’t require any equipment!

First, start with a warm-up.  Class favorites include the Bird Dog, 2-leg Hip Extension, and Jumping Jacks.  Do 30 seconds of each warm-up exercise back-to-back without rest, then repeat that short circuit 1 more time.

Second, it’s time for the workout!  Perform each exercise for 30 seconds, back to back, without rest, until you’ve completed the round.  Then take one minute rest and repeat the whole thing 2-3 more times.  The point is to perform as many repetitions as you can in that 30 seconds.

The exercises are:

  1. Bodyweight Squat
  2. Push-ups (full or kneeling)
  3. Jump Squat
  4. Y-Pulldown
  5. Plank
  • Rest 1 minute, repeat circuit 2-3 times

Then, much to your tired muscles’ chagrin, we’re going to perform Depletion (you can take a 2-minute rest first though). The purpose of this is to get the rest of the glycogen stores depleted from your liver and muscles, forcing your metabolism sky-high for the next 24 to 48 hours.  There are two exercises, Burpees and Mountain Climbers. Perform each exercise for 20 seconds, then take 10 seconds to rest and transition to the next exercise. Repeat this cycle 3 more times, for a total of four minutes.

Finally, lovely, lovely cooldown.  The camelback, sun salutation, and lunge stretch are popular cooldown exercises in my classes.  Perform each exercise for 30 seconds (except sun salutation, which lasts about a minute), then go do some stretching.

All in all, a great workout in less than 30 minutes.
